Homeopathy & Tick Bites
Is it just me, or is there something kind of creepy about ticks? The way they scuttle around and disappear so easily into hair and clothing. Ugh! There’s something unsettling about finding a tick on you. Along with the initial shock you might be thinking Will I react? Should I worry? Is my body dealing with this?
If you’ve found a tick roaming about, get rid of it and check for any signs of a bite. If the tick has embedded itself, make sure you follow proper tick removal guides that include removing the head with the body. If concerning symptoms arise seek medical attention right away, this blog is intended for educational purposes only. Keep an eye out for changes such as an expanding rash, fever, flu-like symptoms, neurological changes, or unusual fatigue.
The First Response: Aconite & Ledum
First off, take a deep breath in your nose and out your mouth. Now take another 2 deep breaths. Do your best to calm your nervous system and mind. You’ve got this - your body knows what to do. And you have Homeopathy on your side!
Immediately after a tick bite, two remedies are commonly thought of:
Aconite
Check-in with yourself and see how you’re feeling mentally/emotionally - is there a sudden and intense sense of panic/worry about what has happened? Agitation, shock, fearfulness? Are you thinking Something is wrong. I feel terrified. I can’t settle since this happened.
Aconite is the remedy to think of for this type of response. Its a great first remedy to consider after any major fright or shock, in particular if there is restlessness (mental or emotional). Often just a dose or two helps immensely.
Ledum
Ledum is one of our top remedies for puncture wounds, bites, and stings. We also see swelling with coldness, bruised soreness, better with cold applications & inflammation that is pale, puffy or dusky.
There is also something notable about the overall Ledum picture: reactions that seem slow to fully resolve, as though the body becomes “stuck” around the site of injury rather than moving through inflammation and recovery normally.
A common protocol for Ledum after a tick bite is 200C once-a-day for the first week, followed by once-a-week for the next month. Please consider your overall sensitivity when dosing a 200C potency this often. People who are more sensitive overall might find this protocol can aggravate and so it would be better to think of a lower potency like 30C or taking the doses in water. Read up on dosing here.
Remedies to Consider when Responses Occur
In those situations where the body responds to the tick bite, there are a number of Homeopathic remedies we can look at, depending on the symptoms that are present.
Apis
hives and itching or swelling of the lips, face, tongue, throat, eyes, etc
burning, stinging sensations
relief from cold applications, worse with warm applications
Arsenicum album
fatigue with anxiety about health, especially at night
exhaustion with restlessness & a chill
burning pains
hypersensitivity
fear and insecurity
digestive issues like vomiting and nausea
Cantharis
a bite or sting that has an intense burning/scalding pain
area around bite is red and blisters may develop
Hypericum
intense nerve pain/shooting sensation of pain after puncture injury
hypersensitivity of skin/surrounding area of bite
pain with numbness or tingling
bites/injuries to nerve rich areas (hands, feet, face)
Rhus tox
stiffness, joint and muscle pains
restlessness and achy, worse at rest/in cold, damp weather
aggravation on first movement but improvement from continued motion
skin rashes that itch or burn
Urtica urens
reddish blotches that burn and itch intensely (like a nettle sting)
hives that sting and itch
We can also consider a few Tissue Salts for after a tick bite. I find tissue salts work really well in acute situations.
Ferrum phos is the first salt I think of for any type of inflammatory situation. There may be redness, heat, mild fever - signs of early inflammation or immune activation.
Next is Kali mur or Kali sulph for later inflammatory phases. With kali mur we might see swelling of glands/lymph nodes and/or thick white secretions. Kali sulph often has symptoms that move, skin eruptions that shift and discharges are yellow.
Finally, for lingering effects from a bite we think of Calc sulph or Silicea. Suppuration, tendency to form abscesses, delayed healing and lingering pus formation point to calc sulph. Reactions to foreign-bodies, lingering puncture effects, and chronic low vitality after injury indicate silicea.
A Final Thought - The Terrain Matters
Most tick bites resolve without any issues and sometimes there is only a little irritation around the bite and the body recovers without difficulty. Occasionally some people notice a lingering shift afterwards: fatigue, strange aches, neurological symptoms, fevers that come and go, or simply the feeling of “never having been quite right since”.
From a homeopathic perspective, this is where things become interesting.
Homeopathy has always paid close attention to the terrain - the underlying susceptibility of the organism. It’s generally not about the causative factor (eg. bug bite, pathogen, toxins), but the way the person responds to it. Two individuals may receive the same bite and have completely different reactions. One is unaffected, while the other develops a prolonged illness long after the bite itself has disappeared.
Homeopathic philosophy has always recognised that stress, exhaustion, suppression, overwork, emotional strain, and chronic imbalance may reduce resilience long before symptoms become visible. The body loses flexibility and becomes “stuck”.
In these situations, constitutional care can help gently support the body back toward resilience, flexibility, and balance again.
